From Frowns to Fun: A Parent's Guide to Enjoyable Photo Sessions

happy family beach photo shoot

Beach family photos are a beautiful way to capture memories, but if you’re a parent, you know that getting little ones to cooperate for pictures can feel like a challenge. As a photographer who has worked with families on Tybee Island and many other places, I’ve learned a few tricks to make the experience fun and stress-free for everyone! Here are my top tips for keeping kids happy during a photoshoot:

Keep It Fun and Playful

Kids respond best to fun! Instead of stiff poses, I encourage movement—running, twirling, playing in the sand, or even jumping in the waves. These candid moments often make for the most heartwarming images.

Bring Snacks and Water

A quick snack break can work wonders for a grumpy toddler. Pack a few mess-free snacks and water to keep them happy and hydrated throughout the session.

Let Them Be Themselves

Some kids love the camera, while others need time to warm up. I always take a relaxed approach, letting them explore and engage at their own pace. When kids feel comfortable, their true personalities shine through in the photos!

Bring a Favorite Toy or Comfort Item

A beloved stuffed animal or small toy can provide comfort and even be incorporated into the photos. If your child has a favorite item, feel free to bring it along!

Dress Them Comfortably

While adorable outfits are great, make sure your child is comfortable. Avoid scratchy fabrics or anything they might want to take off five minutes into the shoot. Lightweight, breathable clothing works best, especially at the beach!

Make It a Game

Turning the session into a game can make a world of difference! I love engaging kids with playful activities like “Simon Says,” races, or a fun scavenger hunt for seashells. These interactive moments keep little ones entertained and help capture their most natural, joyful expressions. When kids are having fun, the smiles come effortlessly!

Be Patient and Go with the Flow

Sometimes kids just need a break, and that’s okay! I always allow time for little ones to reset for a short moment if they start feeling overwhelmed. The key is to stay positive—kids pick up on energy, so if the adults are relaxed and having fun, they will too.

Use Positive Reinforcement

Encourage and praise your child throughout the session. A simple “You’re doing such a great job!” goes a long way in making them feel special and excited. I love encouraging them to have the most fun on our beach adventure!

Prepare for Weather

The sun can be intense, so I recommend applying sunscreen before the session to keep everyone comfortable. Depending on the time of year, you might also encounter a few uninvited guests—gnats and mosquitoes. These tiny nuisances can be distracting, especially for kids who are sensitive to bug bites. I typically bring an extra can of No Natz Bug Spray, which works wonders in keeping the bugs away so your family can focus on having fun. If your child is prone to irritation, you might also consider bringing a lightweight, long-sleeve cover-up for added protection.

Family photos should be a fun and memorable experience for everyone—especially kids! With a little preparation and the right mindset, your beach session can be filled with laughter, love, and beautiful memories. If you’re ready to book a session on Tybee Island, I’d love to help you capture these special moments with your family!

Until next time,

Taylor
